The use of postcards has steadily increased, especially in recent years, with more companies printing advertisements on postcards and sending them out to households via EDDM (Every Door Direct Mail). You may have even received one yourself. However, if you search online for information about postcard printing, you often come across content that’s either trivial or common knowledge.
Here, we’ve compiled some key points that designers often overlook when creating postcards:
1、Choose a thicker material for printing—It makes your content feel more important and lasts longer.
Thicker paper feels more substantial and premium than thinner paper. When someone receives your postcard, they’ll immediately notice the difference in weight and texture. This makes your postcard seem more important compared to other, standard postcards. Similarly, when people want to highlight something important, they often use bold text to make it stand out from the rest of the content.
Postcards can be either laminated or non-laminated. If there’s no lamination, you can easily write with a pencil or a regular ballpoint pen. However, if the postcard is laminated, you can only write on it with oil-based pens or permanent markers.
Non-laminated postcards are easier to write on, but when printing text, the ink spreads more than on laminated postcards. If the font is too thin, it can appear unclear, especially with a dark background. Pay special attention to this when designing.
Laminated postcards are more durable and have a more vibrant, bright appearance. The printed ink is also less likely to fade. However, if you try to write with a water-based pen, the ink can take longer to dry and might smudge easily, leaving marks.
The main purpose of a postcard is to send it, so don’t forget to leave enough space for the postage stamp and the recipient's address.
